About The Event

Warehouse Workshops #15

Educator: Justin Jones - Cinematographer

This class is designed for filmmakers, animators, and creatives who want to master the art of previsualization (previz) and enhance their workflows using Blender. We'll walk through recreating a set digitally, lighting techniques, and using that previz to refine your on-set decisions for a polished final shot.

Class Outline:

Introduction to Tools

We’ll start with an overview of the key tools you’ll use, including Blender, on-set gear, actors, and the physical set. This is crucial to understanding how to translate a real-world environment into a 3D digital space.

Part 1: Previsualization in Blender

  1. Quick intro to Blender, including relevant add-ons for film production.
  2. Talk about scouting and building your digital set.
  3. Building out a previz shot of a sample set.
  4. Lighting setups in Blender.
  5. Understanding lighting limitations, luminance values, and placement.
  6. Hard vs soft lighting and creating atmosphere.
  7. Crafting a previz that supports the story visually.

Part 2: On-Set Lighting

  1. Recreate and refine the lighting setups from the previz for the physical set.
  2. Run through each shot with real-world lighting, comparing it with the digital previz.
  3. Make adjustments and improve the shot based on what worked or didn’t during the previz comparison.

Part 3: Final Adjustments and Getting the shot.

  1. Use insights from the previz and set lighting to make final adjustments.
  2. Capture final takes and optimize the lighting based on previous testing.

Part 4: Q&A and Discussion

  1. Open discussion for questions, clarifications, and deeper dives into specific topics.

By the end of the class, participants will have a clear understanding of how to leverage Blender for previsualization and translate those ideas into precise on-set decisions.

See everyone September 28th!
